Steel has it's own Oxygen Plant, manufactured
by L'Air Liquide of France. The plant is designed and
operated to a capacity to fulfill all our production
needs. The plant comprises two identical air separation
units in which oxygen and nitrogen are distilled from
the atmosphere. The main consumer of oxygen is the Steel
Making Plant where oxygen is blown into the convertors
in order to convert molten iron into steel. Oxygen is
also supplied to the Central Maintenance department
where it used in welding and cutting processes.
The gaseous Nitrogen produced is mainly
used as a shielding & purging gas at the Cold Rolling
Mill in the annealing & galvanizing units. Nitrogen
is also used in the hydraulic systems of the Cold Rolling
and Hot Strip Mills and as an inert gas at the Coke
Dry Quenching Plant. In addition both gases are also
supplied in cylinders to facilitate the work where pipeline
network is not available.
